What we collect
The first time you open sQarrows, our game server creates an account for you with a random player ID. Everything below is tied to that player ID unless the table says otherwise. You don't need to give us your name or email to play.
| Data | What it includes | When we collect it |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Your player ID, and a random ID that links this device to your account | Automatically, on first launch |
| Nickname | The nickname you choose; other players see it on leaderboards and in tournaments | When you set it |
| Game progress | Saved games: puzzles solved, gold, items, mosaics, settings, leaderboard and tournament scores, and referrals (who invited you, and whom you invited) | As you play; saved on your device and on our server |
| Purchases | What you bought, when, its price, and the store's receipt and transaction ID, so the purchase can be verified and delivered | When you buy something. Apple or Google handle payment; we never see your card details |
| Apple or Google sign-in | An account identifier from Apple or Google, and your email address if you choose to share it (Apple lets you hide it) | Only if you sign in with Apple or Google in Settings |
| Device and advertising identifiers | Your device's advertising ID (on iPhone and iPad, only if you allow tracking), identifiers that our providers' software creates for this install, device model, operating system and app version | Automatically |
| Gameplay and usage | Puzzles started and finished, time taken, words found, hints used, screens visited, ads shown, purchases, and some settings | Automatically, as you play |
| Diagnostics | Crash reports, error reports, startup times and other performance data | Automatically, when something goes wrong or as the game starts |
| Approximate location | Country and city worked out from your IP address. We never use GPS or precise location | Automatically, by our analytics and advertising providers |
| Support emails | Your email address, what you write, and a copy of your saved game that the game adds to the email (it includes your player ID) | Only when you email us |
We don't collect your contacts, photos, precise location or payment card details.
How we use it
We use your data to run the game, to fix and improve it, to show ads and to measure our own advertising. We don't sell your data for money. The last column gives the legal basis for people in the EU, the UK and other places with similar laws.
| Purpose | Data used | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Run the game and your account: saving and syncing progress across devices, leaderboards, tournaments, referral rewards, restoring purchases | Account, nickname, game progress, purchases, sign-in | Performing our agreement with you |
| Verify and deliver purchases, and stop fraud | Purchases, account, device identifiers | Performing our agreement with you; legal obligations such as keeping tax records |
| Understand how the game is played, find bugs and improve it. Our analytics records your player ID with your gameplay, so we can follow one player's experience across sessions and devices | Account, gameplay and usage, diagnostics, device identifiers, approximate location, purchases | Our legitimate interest in a working, enjoyable game |
| Show ads, and personalized ads where you allow them | Advertising identifiers, device data, approximate location, ad interactions | Your consent for personalized ads; our legitimate interest for non-personalized ads |
| Measure our own advertising: which ads brought players to the game and whether they played or bought anything | Account, device and advertising identifiers, installs, play sessions, purchases | Your consent where the law requires it (on iPhone and iPad, through Apple's tracking prompt); otherwise our legitimate interest |
| Answer your support requests | Support emails and the saved game attached to them | Our legitimate interest in helping you |
| Meet legal obligations and protect our rights | Any of the above, as needed | Legal obligation; legitimate interest |
Who receives it
These companies receive data from the game. Most process it only for us; the advertising networks and Meta also use it under their own policies, linked below.
| Company | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| brainCloud (bitHeads Inc.) | Your account and player ID, nickname, saved games, scores, referrals, purchase receipts, and your Apple or Google sign-in identifier and email if you sign in | Our game server: accounts, saves, leaderboards, tournaments, verifying purchases |
| Google Analytics for Firebase (Google LLC) | Your player ID, an ID for this install, gameplay and usage, diagnostics, purchases, approximate location, and your advertising ID if allowed | Analytics |
| Singular (Singular Labs, Inc.) | Your player ID, device and advertising identifiers, installs, play sessions, purchases and ad revenue, referral links | Measuring our ad campaigns; the links friends use to invite you |
| Meta (Meta Platforms, Inc.), through its app SDK | Device and advertising identifiers (if allowed), and app events such as installs, app opens and purchases | Measuring our ad campaigns on Facebook and Instagram |
| Google AdMob (Google LLC) | Advertising and device identifiers, device data, IP address and approximate location, the ads you see and tap | Showing ads, and choosing which network's ad to show |
| AdMob's partner networks: AppLovin, Meta Audience Network, Mintegral, Unity Ads | Advertising and device identifiers, device data, IP address and approximate location, the ads you see and tap | Showing ads |
| Backtrace (Sauce Labs Inc.) | Crash and error reports: what the game was doing, device model, operating system, app version. Not your player ID | Fixing crashes |
| Unity Technologies | Purchase details as the store reports them, your IP address when the game downloads new puzzles and pictures, and device and usage data that Unity's engine services collect | Processing in-app purchases; delivering game content; running the engine's services |
| Apple and Google | Payment, and sign-in if you use it | The App Store and Google Play handle payment; Sign in with Apple and Google sign-in |
We may also disclose data when the law requires it, or to a buyer if the business is sold, under this policy.
Ads, tracking and your choices
sQarrows is free and paid for by ads and purchases. You can limit how your data is used for advertising in these ways:
- iPhone and iPad: the game asks whether it may track you. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, your advertising ID isn't shared and we don't link your data with other companies' data for advertising. You can change this any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- EU, UK and other places that require consent: a consent form appears before any ads load. To change your choice later, open the game's Settings and tap Update GDPR Settings.
- Android: you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Settings (Privacy > Ads, or Google > Ads, depending on the device).
- No Ads: buying No Ads, or having a No Ads reward, removes banner ads and the ads between games. Ads you choose to watch for a reward are still offered.
Our analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase) and crash reporting keep running whatever you choose above, because we use them to keep the game working. To have your analytics data deleted, see the next section.
sQarrows doesn't respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals.
Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account in the game: open Settings and tap Delete Account. This can't be undone.
Deleted at once: your account on our game server, with your saved progress, scores, nickname and referrals, and the game's data on your device. The game then starts again with a new, empty account. Gold, items and progress are lost. No Ads can be restored from Apple or Google with Restore Purchases.
Deleted on request: our analytics records, and some of the data our measurement partners hold, are stored under your player ID, which the game no longer knows once the account is gone. To have them deleted, Send Feedback from the game's Settings before deleting your account, so your message includes your player ID. We will delete your analytics records and ask Singular and Meta to delete what they hold about you, within one month.
Not affected: your device's own backups (iCloud or Google) keep a copy of the game's files until they are next replaced. Advertising networks hold data under your advertising ID rather than your player ID: reset that ID in your device's settings, and see each network's policy above.
How long we keep data
We keep data only as long as we need it for the purposes above.
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Account, saved games, nickname, referrals | Until you delete your account |
| Purchase records on our server | Until you delete your account. Apple and Google keep their own payment records |
| Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase) | As long as it helps us understand and improve the game; sooner on request (see above) |
| Crash and error reports (Backtrace) | As long as it helps us fix the problem it reports |
| Measurement data (Singular, Meta) | Under each company's own retention policy |
| Support emails | As long as we need it to help you, and to keep a record of what we agreed |
We may keep data longer when the law requires it, or to settle a dispute.
Children
sQarrows is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13, or under the age of digital consent where you live if that is higher (up to 16 in parts of the EU). The game doesn't ask your age. If you believe a child has played and want their data removed, contact us as described above, then delete the account in the game.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us what data we hold about you, for a copy, to correct it or to delete it. Send Feedback from the game's Settings, so we can find your data by your player ID. We answer within one month, free of charge, and you won't be treated differently for asking.
| Where you live | Your additional rights |
|---|---|
| EU and UK | Restrict or object to our use of your data, move it to another service, withdraw consent at any time, and complain to your data protection authority. EU residents can also contact our data protection officer or our EU representative |
| California and other US states with privacy laws | Know what we collect and who receives it, delete and correct it, and opt out of targeted advertising. We don't sell data for money. To opt out of ads based on your activity in other apps, choose Ask App Not to Track on iPhone or iPad, or delete your advertising ID on Android, or email us |
| Brazil | The rights in the LGPD, including confirmation that we process your data, anonymization or blocking of unnecessary data, information about who we share it with, and complaints to the ANPD |
| Canada | Access and correction under PIPEDA, and complaints to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada |
Where data is stored, and security
We are based in Canada, and our providers store data in the United States and other countries. When data about people in the EU or UK leaves those regions, our providers protect it with the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
The game sends data over encrypted connections, and the saved games on your device are encrypted. Only the people who run sQarrows can reach our server's data. No system is perfectly secure, but we will tell you and the authorities without delay if a breach puts your data at risk.
